My roommate has thrush and was told to get an anti-fungal mouthwash, lozenges and the prescription she doesn’t want to get/take. She like alternative medicine and wasn’t sure what was the best thing for it. We read that alcohol-free Tea Tree Oil Mouthwash works wonders. What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

You need drops or lozenges which contain drugs such as nystatin or miconazole. You apply this directly to the area. In the vast majority of cases, it will resolve the problem.

    EDIT
Ignore the quack Minx. The yeast used in baking and other foods is Sacharomyces cereviseie (sp? I can’t spell worth a crap), not Candida. It’s a different specie.

Avoiding sugar is just idiotic. Your body actually absorbs simple sugar, so it won’t have any effect on anything in your large instestine. The idea that avoiding sugar will starve candida is beyond stupid. If you want to starve candida you’d need to avoid vegetables and consume simple sugars and this would only work if candida was present in your large intestine. Go back to school and learn physiology the quacks failed it miserably.

    EDIT:
And what exactly is that supposed to mean, Lighty?

You need to avoid all yeast and sugar products to kill a yeast infection like thrush ……… sugar and yeast will literally feed the yeast overgrowth allowing it to flourish……… ditch the alcohol and sodas and diet sodas too if you drink any ………. antiobiotics, especially broad – spectrum antiobiotics will kill the helpful bacteria which you need for a healthy gut …….. supplement with a good quality probiotic to rebalance gut flora in that instance ……… ensure you get one that is lactose or dairy free in case you have any unaddressed food intolerances as well …….. a powdered version that requires refridgeration would be the most suitable and easiest to assimilate ….. this part is absolutely essential for without the good flora your system will remain completely out of whack …… eat more alkaline forming foods such as leafy and green vegies, fishes such as tuna, salmon, sardines and whiting, organic nuts and seeds such as almonds and brazil nuts…….. all these foods are rich in magnesium and will thus encourage the production of hydrochloric acid in your tummy aiding in digestion and effective elimination .

also go to your local health food store and ask the resident naturopath his/her advice on Grapefruit seed extract ……. they don’t usually charge for off the cuff advice and are more than willing to share their knowledge ….. Grapefruit seed extract is a multipurpose (broad spectrum) compound that is currently being used in humans and animals alike to safely fight many types of internal and external infections caused from parasites (single and multi-celled), viruses, bacteria and fungi.

Grapefruit seed extracts biggest benefit is due to it’s multipurpose (broad spectrum) effect. It is effective even if the causes of the infections are known, unknown or misdiagnosed. By eliminating a wide range of dangerous pathogens grapefruit seed extract actually enhances the immune system.

it might taste nasty but it works.

If your room mate is kooky enough not to take her medicine then I suggest you let her be and sort herself out. It’s not worth interfering.

I’d like to see some peer reviewed studies showing that avoiding eating anything with yeasts is a good idea if you have a fungal infection.

You need to encourage your room mate to eat anything and everything with fungus and yeast in it in the hope that it out-competes the candida. So lots of bread, lots of fermented foods, sugar is good because it encourages the competing yeasts, especially honey. Don’t forget that honey doesn’t spoil so you want to eat as much as you can so YOU don’t spoil.

Agree with Minx that you need to address diet – cut out bread, sugar, alcohol, anything processed – eat lots of fresh veg and definately some of it raw, probiotics good advice, drink water or herbals,,,the grapefruit seed extract is a good germ killer and you won’t taste it once it’s diluted, you can also use herbs like raw garlic (a top germ killer), tea made out of rosemary leaves, and make sure you get lots of vitamin C…all this is the easy part; the diet is more important and possibly harder to implement! There is lots of advice online, look for: re-alkalising the body, enzymes, raw food, cleansing….when you get a problem like thrush it is a signal from an overburdened body, so the solution is to clean out and the body will be able to function normally again.

    All the best x

There are effective natural cures for yeast infections available that can help to soothe the discomfort and frustration of a yeast infection and other symtoms of thrush, resolving the infection without the use of prescriptions and OTC drugs. They contain ingredients such as Cymbopogon citratus (Lemon grass), Calendula officinalis, and Tabebuia impetiginosa (Pau d’arco bark). All have antibacterial and antifungal properties that effectively remove toxins and help to support the overall natural maintenance systems in the body.

Natural treatment for vaginal thrush has proven to be effective as well for relieving the pain and discomfort of candidiasis and for controlling candida overgrowth. There are many herbs with anti-fungal properties which may be used topically or internally to deal with the problem.

Apart from treating the fungal overgrowth itself, herbal remedies can also help to improve immune system strength, thereby helping to protect the body against future attacks. Herbal and homeopathic treatments are not only safe and effective to use, but also non-addictive without any side effects.
