do not use bleach! that’s an old remedy and people don’t know that it’s a harsh chemical. same with iodine. it dries out the hoof, and it’s not good, either
go to the grocery store and get DAWN ANTI BACTERIAL dish soap. It’s mild and doesn’t hurt the horse’s hoof and it’s cheap and easy to use. and it works
it costs like a dollar something….
put that in on the hoof…frog…..and scrub it into it. leave it in or wash it out. it will kill the bacteria (all that thrush is)
it’s cheap and it works.
you can do this 2-3 times a week depending on how bad the thrush is.
One treatment that is really easy if Thrush XX. It an aerosol bottle that you can spray upside down and it gets the whole bottom of the hoof covered quickly. The stuff itself isn’t that expensive, and most horse stores sell it. It helps cure thrush in about a week as long as you apply it daily. It’s great because you don’t waste any since it’s a spray on solution.
Bleach works well and you can use it with a spray bottle and everything. Just be aware that it may sting a little like most other chemicals will so your horse may react but it shouldnt cause any lamness. Hope that this helps
Half bleach half water, make sure you don’t spray your clothes haha
Iodine is good and probably not as harsh as bleach.
get bleach and soak the hoof in it/spray some on with a squirt bottle. then wrap the hoof.
threesistersherbals.com <– go to that site! That’s where I bought my ALL NATURAL thrush treatment. Works wonders!
You should not use any of the commercial thrush medications if you want to heal your horse’s feet. They are all damaging in different ways in that they kill healthy tissue and diseased tissue. None of them are good for your horse’s feet.
Healing the thrush can depend on how severe it is. Is it superficial? Is it only in the collateral grooves or has it invaded the central sulcus? If it is in the central sulcus, you probably have a pretty advanced case that has gone deeply into your horse’s foot.
Nothing is quick. This is not, as previously believed, a cosmetic or inconsequenial problem, especially for your horse. When the central sulcus is falling away, the horse is in pain every time his foot strikes the ground, particularly if you are riding and asking for trotting or cantering for a prolonged period of time. I have actually used the soft pad of my thumb to judge severity and can bring a horse almost to their knees with very little pressure.
You can soak your horse’s feet 30 minutes per day in 50/50 water and apple cider vinegar. This will change the pH and make it impossible for the fungus to live. If the infection is deep, this will help, but there is also a bacterial component that has to be addressed. For this, what I use is mastitis medication for a DRY cow from Tractor Supply (12 tubes for about $15.00). Inject the medication into the central and collateral grooves after cleaning gently and daily until healing occurs. You will have to monitor closely because with a minimal amount of moisture, the infection can come back with a vengence. If this infection is well established, it will not be a quick fix, but the mastitis medication will give you good results better than anything else AND it is 100% safe. It will not harm your horse in any way. I always keep a couple of boxes on hand.
It is not my intention to bash anyone, however, most of the answers are telling you to do very very harmful things to your horse’s feet. Never, ever use bleach, formaldehyde, iodine, hydrogen peroxide or any of the "old home remedies". Again, these things kill normal, healthy tissue. These people who are recommending this are incorrect (I do have a degree in chemistry among other things). My rule of thumb is this, if YOU feel safe putting something in YOUR mouth and swishing it around for five minutes, then it is safe to put on your horse’s feet. I would never use anything on my horses that I would not use on myself, but that’s just me. Help your horse. It is not difficult. It is not expensive. You can do it yourself. My methods are absolutely safe for your horse. Best of luck.
One thing we used and still use as a preventive measure are acidophilus capsules. You just pick you horse’s hooves then break one open , pour it on the infected areas and rub it in with a brush. It also prevents thrush from returning.
Iodine.
Kopertox, you should be able to find it at your local farm store equine section. Wrap with dry cotton wrap & flex wrap to keep clean, but change daily. otherwise you will need to keep standing on a dry clean surface like cement until the feet air out & dry from medication. But keep off of extremely wet or moist ground, keep in a dry lot or stall.
NO bleach.
Cider vinegar kills bacteria.
